According to police, this incident took place at about 10:50 A.M. on April 4, 2025. At approximately 10:00 A.M, a San Diego police sergeant was driving in the area of 31 street and K street when a community member approached his patrol car and asked for help. The reporting party said a man, later identified as 20 years old Kevin Gonzalez, pulled a gun on him next to a church in the 200 block of 31 street. At 9:50 A.M., security camera video showed Gonzalez next to a blue Ford Fusion. When the reporting party drove by, Gonzalez allegedly brandished a handgun. At about 10:15 A.M., the reporting party drove up to the sergeant's vehicle and informed the sergeant of Gonzalez's location. The sergeant approached Gonzalez in the Ford Fusion and gave him commands to show his hands. He did not comply. Additional officers arrived on the scene. Gonzalez was inside the car and a woman was standing outside when officers arrived. Officers gave commands for them to show their hands, the woman cooperated, but Gonzalez did not and remained in the vehicle. Officer Hagen spoke in spanish to Gonzalez and told him to show his hands. Gonzalez would transition between showing one hand, both hands, or concealing both hands in the vehicle. police said. Officers negotiated with Gonzalez for approximately 40 minutes. During that time, he told spanish speaking officers that he didn't want to go back in jail and officers would have to kill him. While negotiating for approximately 40 minutes, officers prepared less-lethal options, such as a K-9, bean bag rounds, and pepperballs, in a effort to de-escalate the situation. The decision was made to use pepperballs inside Gonzalez's vehicle. Oficer Fernandez fired multiple pepperballs through the driver's side window of the vehicle. Gonzalez lowered his body out of sight, raised it back up, and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officers. In response, five officers and one sergeant discharged their service weapons. Officers removed Gonzalez from the vehicle and began medical aid until the arrival of paramedics. Gonzalez was transported to the hospita where he later died of his injuries. Inside the car, officers found a BB gun that resembled a revolver. Police said, no officers or uninvolved member of the public were injured in the incident.
