Tire Theft Suspect Crashes into Officers Then Tries to Swim Away

Southfield, Michigan — On July 1, 2025, around 3 a.m., a resident’s 911 call tipped off authorities to suspicious activity involving two men removing tires from a Ford F-150. The suspects fled in a rented Chrysler Pacifica, a vehicle choice police say is favored by thieves for its capacity to discreetly haul stolen car parts. Southfield Police Officers soon spotted the van and initiated a pursuit that included reckless driving through yards and a dangerous maneuver against traffic that ended with the van smashing into a marked police cruiser, injuring two officers. Undeterred by the crash, the suspect, 31-year-old Trachawn McCaa, bolted from the wreckage and dove into a nearby pond in a desperate bid to avoid arrest, only to be met by more officers on the opposite shore. The suspect jumped back in, attempting to swim away, but ultimately surrendered. McCaa and his accomplice, 51-year-old Prince Madison, who was discovered hiding in the rear of the vehicle, were both arrested. Authorities say both men have extensive felony records and now face charges of larceny from a motor vehicle, with McCaa also charged with third-degree fleeing and eluding. With bail set at $50,000 and $5,000, respectively, both men will be required to wear a GPS tether while out on bond.
