Spike strip shreds tires on SUV, ends pursuit

o

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A driver in a suspected stolen SUV led authorities on a lengthy chase on freeways and surface streets from the Inland Empire to Los Angeles County Wednesday evening.

After more than an hour, the chase finally ended at Garfield Avenue and Via San Clemente in the Montebello area when a spike strip damaged two tires on the SUV.

At least six cruisers surrounded the SUV as the suspect slowly came out after several minutes inside the vehicle. Officers appeared to have used "less-than-lethal" rounds to get the suspect out.

Officers then handcuffed the suspect without incident.

Prior to the arrest, the driver came to a sudden stop at Fernfield Drive and Fulton Avenue in a Monterey Park neighborhood, and it appeared the pursuit was coming to an end. A standoff began as the suspect refused to surrender and several California Highway Patrol officers began descending on the area.
