According to the Louisville Metro Police Department,
at around 12.30 P.m. on April 20th, 2025 officers responded to a
call in the 3300 block of Arterburn Avenue on reports of a man yelling,
possibly intoxicated, and breaking out apartment windows.
When they arrived, they encountered the
man and began to speak with him.
They recognized he had a knife and
immediately told him not to reach for it.
As the officers continued to speak with
the suspect, he approached them.
As they tried to detain him, the subject
resisted and was taken to the ground by officers.
One of the officers attempted to use a
taser, but it was ineffective.
McCollum reached for the knife and
attempted to stab one of the officers.
That officer was wearing a protective
vest, which stopped the knife from
penetrating the skin.
The other officer shot McCollum,
striking him in the head.
Both officers rendered aid until EMS
arrived.
McCollum was transported to the
University of Louisville Hospital where
he was pronounced deceased.
The first officer involved in this
critical incident is Officer Benjamin Klingenfus.
Officer Klingenfus has 19 years of
service and is currently assigned to the
5th Division Patrol Division.
Officer Klingenfus was the officer
that discharged his firearm during this incident.
The second officer involved in this
critical incident is Officer Cody Chapelle.
Officer Chapelle has 27 years of service
with the Louisville Metro Police
Department and is currently assigned to
Fit Division Patrol Division.
Officer Chapelle was the officer that
was stabbed in the vest by the suspect.
The suspect in this incident is Ahtume McCollum.
McCollum was born January 14th, 1989 and
he lived in the area in the Arterburn
Crossing apartment complex.
This incident took place in the 3300
block of Arterburn Avenue at the
Arterburn Crossing apartment complex.
