Mesa Officers Shoot at Fleeing Teens Who Drove Stolen Truck Toward Them

Mesa, Arizona — On June 12th, 2025, just before 5:00 p.m., the Mesa Police Department Realtime Crime Center alerted officers of a stolen vehicle near Power Road and University that had previously fled from officers. The Mesa Police Department air unit saw the truck traveling south on Power Road and continued to watch overhead as detectives in unmarked vehicles responded to the area. The stolen vehicle continued to travel east on Broadway towards 72nd Place where officers made the decision to use a grappler device as an attempt to stop the truck. The grapple was not successful and the suspect vehicle drove into a residential cul-de-sac where it abruptly made a U-turn, left the roadway, drove through a residential yard, and faced head-on with responding officers. The truck continued to drive towards officers and crash into the side of an occupied police vehicle. This is when the officer involved shooting occurred. The stolen truck was occupied by two 17-year-old suspects who did not immediately respond to officer's directions to exit the stolen vehicle. So, a diversionary device was deployed and several rounds from less lethal pepper ball launcher were fired to gain compliance. Additional video from the Mesa Police Department's air unit shows the two 17-year-old juvenile suspects being taken into custody. Neither the driver nor the passenger were shot during the incident, but the driver did sustain minor non-life-threatening injuries from the collision with the police vehicle. There were no officers injuries
