Wanted felon followed by Utah police and tries to escape

On November 4, 2024, U.S. Marshals spotted Daniel Lynn Meinhart, 43, in his car at a business in the Sugar House Park neighbourhood. According to authorities, Meinhart had several warrants for his arrest and had a history of aggravated assaults, including the attempted murder of a police officer. Due to Meinhart’s history, a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was called to follow him until they found a moment to arrest him without endangering the public. Authorities followed Meinhart across Salt Lake City for over an hour until he parked in a car repair shop in the Sugar House Park neighbourhood. That’s when federal and local authorities attempted to box Meinhart in the parking lot. However, Meinhart briefly escaped authorities before his vehicle was disabled on the sidewalk. Meinhart refused to get out of his truck and rolled down his window. Authorities say he held up a black object and started yelling threats at officers. Two marshal deputies fired a “less-lethal 40mm round” and four 9mm rounds at Meinhart in response. Two of the 9mm rounds hit Meinhart. Several minutes later, Meinhart was taken into custody without further incident. He pleaded guilty in July 2025 to failing to stop for police, a third-degree felony.
